Family Room Overhaul

So this is happening lovers. My family room (posted yest) has been as is for 4 yrs- an eternity for me.  I've loved it long time and need a change. I had the idea to base new decor inspiration on a feeling rather than an aesthetic. Before you go thinking I sound like a weirdie hear me out...

I put my best glossy foot forward in the interwebs, (don't we all?) but, truth is life has been one hell of a ride for 5 yrs. I've struggled to care for 5 boys, run a house amidst major renos, deal with divorce and a law suit against friends I adored, all while isolated in a city where I had few to lean on. The sadness I felt was pervasive. For the longest time I was surviving rather than living.

So that's where we were, and what was lost but I'll change direction because it's really about our life now and what's been gained. I struggle, yes, but I feel gratitude for every test because it's brought me to where I am today. For the first time in years I feel tremendous freedom, overall peace and a joy in my heart that was missing for so long. I'm looking forward to the next chapters in life and am going to start by expressing this in our home, as this seems to be what I do best.

This room needs to say where we are now. Everything I layer in the space will bare symbolism of happiness, heart, and comfort as we invite more in to our lives. Make sense?
I'm not entirely certain what it will look like. I do, however, know how I want it to feel... like it's Saturday everyday and the room is a canvas that I painted liberally with love.
This amazing art by Zoe Pawlak was what got the whole idea going for me. It just rings true in a time of such happy change. The remaining images strike a chord as well. (all via)
I'm getting started right away. Making a list of what stays and what will go.
You like? Happy Friday! xo

I love this idea! I think as designers, we express ourselves through our work and what better place to do that in our own home. I'm sad to hear the hard time you've gone through but I'm sure it has made you and your boys stronger, I am positive you can only go up from here! Can't wait to see the finished project :)

Wow Erica. I admire your ability to put it all out there. Good for you and I"m so glad for you that you're moving to a happy place in your life. I know what it feels like to live in a place with little support and it makes the tough times even tougher. You're such a strong woman. Happy Friday and I can't wait to see this awesome room.

I have no doubt that whatever direction you take that room it will not only be fabulous but it will exude the warmth and love that you're putting into it.

Here's to the blank canvas.

Inspired by your fearlessness...and in love with the happiness of pink...I can't wait to see the butterfly that bursts from this cocoon.
It's taken me 8 years to make my surroundings match my new normal (and yes, pink has been there for me in all its joyful goodness)
Hard, exhausting, frightening and quietly magical....this is no easy journey, but quite an adventure....
cheers to your "fresh start"

Change is a wonderful thing. You are a strong person Erica. I've been sort of following your journey for a while now, and am a single mama too, so I can relate on some level!! (although not to 5). I can't wait to see the new room! I'm sure the process will be cleansing and it will turn out amazing!

I saw your home featured on Kristen's blog and had to come over to say hi. You have no idea how this post resonated with me. Freedom . . . joy . . . love- yes, that's what is important in life and we can all create it for ourselves. Thanks for sharing. Your home (and heart) are beautiful.
